The 'Liisu' is an example of the traditional wooden trawler used on Lake Võrtsjärv, whose graceful appearance has seen it often used as a pleasure craft. It is essentially a sailboat, with a streamlined hull and two triangular sails. Over time these boats disappeared from Lake Võrtsjärv – the last was destroyed in a fire in 1985 during Midsummer celebrations in the village of Valma. But two enterprising men, Marko Vaher and Ants Leiaru, have reinstated the sailboats to the lake: construction of the 'Paula' was completed in 2005 with the support of the Võrtsjärv Foundation, while summer 2009 saw the 'Liisu' take to the waters of the lake.
